Loft Insulations
What is Loft Insulation?
Loft insulation is a man-made mineral fibre in a roll form. This is often referred to as "quilt" the material generally used is made from silica, creating a wool type product also known as glass wool.

The installation is a simple process and is laid between and across the Joists. This process should only take 1-2 Hours.

What are the benefits of having Loft Insulation?
There are many benefits of having loft insulation, the most obvious being the money you can save in energy bills. The average sized household could save up to £205 per year every year. By getting your loft insulated you will also help to reduce the irreversible effects that we are having on the environment as loft insulation greatly helps reduce your home's carbon foot print.

Getting your loft insulated will also help keep your house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. You will be able to reduce noise from outside (e.g. traffic), improve your home's energy efficiency rating.

Less obvious benefits also exist such as EPC's (Energy Performance Certificates), you may be aware that all properties that are put on the market for sale or rent now require an EPC. This shows how energy efficient your property is. Having your loft insulated to at least the minimum recommended amount will vastly improve you property's energy rating. This could make the difference between selling/renting your property rather than it staying on the market. Due to rising energy costs the new occupier will want to know that their energy bills are going to be at a minimum. It is also widely speculated that in the near future council tax will be partly based on the properties energy rating. So getting your loft insulated could also potentially reduce your council tax bills in the future.

How much do I need?
The amount of loft insulation required in lofts has gradually increased in the past 50 years. If your house is more than 10 years old there is a big chance that you could benefit greatly from getting your loft insulated. It is now widely recognised that thicker insulation brings significant improvements to the energy efficiency of homes. Current building regulations recommend that you have a minimum of 270mm, so it's not surprising that many older homes do not comply with current regulations. You can easily check if your home is up to the latest regulations by lifting the loft hatch and measuring the distance between the top of the insulation and the board below. If you find that you are under the recommended amount of 270mm we suggest you get your loft insulated as soon as possible.

How much does it cost?
You may be able to get your loft for FREE, and if not everyone is entitled to a grant of some sort. Please take a look at our grants page for more information.
